Migraine Trigger: Wheat Products
Wheat products are a top migraine trigger.
Elimination diets that eliminate wheat are extremely successful at reducing or eliminating headaches and migraines.
Twelve reasons why wheat products are a top migraine trigger:
1. Wheat allergies are associated with increased migraine frequency (study link).
2. 2007 IgG Study Eliminates Wheat and Migraines
Wheat was a top IgG allergen in a 2007 study that successfully reduced migraines in 85 percent of patients and completely eliminated migraines in 77 percent of patients (study link).
Wheat was also a top IgG allergen in a 2010 study that successfully reduced migraines (study link).
3. Wheat Elimination and Complete Migraine Elimination
Wheat was the top migraine trigger in a 1979 study that reduced migraines in 100 percent of patients and completely eliminated migraines in 85 percent of patients (study link).
Wheat was a top trigger in a subsequent study that completely eliminated migraines in 89 percent of patients (study link).
4. Wheat is a Top Acne Trigger
Wheat is a top trigger for acne (study link).
The odds are 7 times higher that a child with migraines will also have acne (study link).
Both acne and migraines are associated with increased levels of inflammation and IgE allergens (study link).
Reduce or eliminate wheat for migraine prevention and skin health.
5. High Glutamic Acid Levels
Wheat products contain large amounts of free glutamic acid.
Free glutamic acid is a top migraine trigger.
6. 1952 Migraine Study with an 80 Percent Success Rate
A study in 1952 that included the elimination of wheat from the diet led to either complete or “almost complete” migraine remission in 80 percent of patients (study link).
7. One-Hundred Percent Success Rate
A small 2001 study of nine patients with severe migraine symptoms found that seven of the nine patients became headache free after the sole elimination of wheat.
The other two patients greatly improved (study link).
8. Leading Medical Authorities Label Wheat a Migraine Trigger
9. Gluten Sensitivity Increases Chronic Headaches
In a migraine study of over 500 people, 56 percent of people with gluten sensitivity suffered from chronic headaches (study link).
10. Refined Carbs Spike Sugar
Wheat products are refined carbohydrates and quickly turn into blood sugar (Harvard link).
What goes up must come down.
11. Wheat Triggers Gut Inflammation
Wheat contains proteins and lectins that can contribute to increased gut inflammation (study link).
12. Wheat Free and Migraine Frequency in the Ketogenic Diet
In 2013, a ketogenic diet that eliminated wheat was found to greatly reduce migraine frequency in 90 percent of patients (study link).
A case study found that two patients became completely migraine free in under three days from a low-carbohydrate diet that eliminated wheat (study link).
Wheat Consumption and Obesity
Obesity and childhood obesity has skyrocketed with the increase of wheat consumption.
Refined carbohydrates will increase the rates for obesity, stroke, and cardiovascular disease.
Migraines are associated with obesity, stroke, and cardiovascular disease (study link).
Whole Grains are Also a Problem
There are studies that show that “whole grains” are healthier than refined grains.
Quinoa and brown rice are healthier than white bread, but they come with high levels of carbohydrates and this is not good for migraine prevention.
They also have low levels of the nutrients that are required for migraine prevention. For example, up to 50 percent of migraineurs are deficient in magnesium (study link).
Grains will require nutrients to process and may even deplete minerals from the body.
“Whole Wheat” is not Whole Wheat
According to FDA standards, whole wheat needs to only contain 51 percent whole wheat (FDA link).
The other 49 percent is usually more sugar, bleached flour, and things you don’t want (Harvard study).
This may be why white bread and whole wheat bread create a nearly identical spike in blood sugar levels (research link).
The food industry is misleading. Many of the products that are labeled as “healthy whole grains” are little more than a sugar spike.
Wheat products don’t have the fiber and nutrients of vegetables and this may lead to problems for migraine sufferers (Scientific American article).
Reduce or Eliminate
Reduce or eliminate wheat, wheat products, and wheat additives.
